Welcome to Growing Up Organic, a Canadian owned family business in Calgary, Alberta.
After the birth of our daughter in 2005, we learned that many baby skin care products on the market were formulated with a variety of synthetic chemicals. We were alarmed to discover that the daily use of these products, along with other products (i.e., household cleaners, plastic toys, plastic baby bottles, mattresses, carpeting, foods) could potentially
affect our child’s health and development. Babies and young children chew on toys, play on floors & lawns and consume
more food than adults (in relation to their body weight). As a result, they have greater exposure to synthetic chemicals, which
can affect their sensitive bodies as they are still growing and maturing.
We decided that it was time for us to follow a path to a healthier "greener" lifestyle for our growing family. Our journey began by switching to organic skin care products, non-toxic household cleaners, cloth diapers and organic foods.
Switching to cloth diapers was an important change for us, considering the fact that children wear them 24 hours a day and for several years. We learned that disposable diapers contain various chemicals and a child will go through 6,000-10,000 of them by 3 years of age. This added up to a huge cost! Then there was the fact that these diapers went into our landfills where they pollute our soil & water, and take many years to decompose. The health, financial and environmental impacts were reason enough for us to make the change.
Our on-going research revealed that conventional cotton is the 2nd heaviest sprayed crop in the world. It's known to pollute our air, water & soil, as well as affect sensitive eco-systems. Did you know that it takes almost 1/3 of a pound of chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) to grow enough cotton to make just one t-shirt? Organic cotton, on the other hand, is grown free of any synthetic chemicals. It's a sustainable product, as well as the softest, strongest and most durable cotton in the world. A much healthier choice for our children's sensitive skin and the reason why we now use organic cotton cloth diapers, clothing, mattresses, bedding and toys in our household.
Every healthy change we made for our family was a stepping stone towards our healthier future and the creation of this organic baby business. We spent nearly a year searching and testing organic baby products from around the world, before deciding to launch our findings! It was a long road to a greener lifestyle, but well worth the journey. The products we carry are tried and true, since they're continually tested on our children. We're very passionate about discovering the safest organic baby products and healthiest alternatives on the market. We were unable to find these organic baby products locally, so we decided to bring them to you. Our goal is to share our experiences & findings and hope you enjoy what we have to offer your family!
